15 Years Later—Still Committed to Serving
15 years ago, I was serving as a Delegate at our Senate District 41 convention. 15 years later, I’m fully committed to being the best candidate and future MN State Senator for this district! I’ve enjoyed personally calling all 474 of you, our district’s Delegates in this campaign, thanking you for your service, talking about important issues and working hard to earn your support for my campaign.
I appreciate all the thought, time and careful work you Delegates and our District’s Central Committee leaders have dedicated over the months, and years, to keep our elected leaders strong and supported.
I thank you all for your dedication to Democracy! Let’s fight for it together! I ask for your support, and endorsement, so I can be a strong leader and fierce advocate for you and our District at the Capitol. I promise you I will fight for what’s right, and what needs to be won, just as I’ve done for my clients and their rights, for the past 36 years. Let’s keep our good, fair, authentic and positive values moving forward!

Leadership Starts with Community
Community always has and always will continue to be of high importance to me. By working directly with local organizations, I have gained a deep understanding of the challenges residents face and the solutions that make the biggest difference. In the last 30 years, my background was shaped by a blend of different volunteer experiences–here’s just a sample:
Served as a board member, chair and President of the Edina Football Association, helping oversee operations, teaching young men–and one young woman–sportmanship and athletic teamwork, and protecting nonprofit funds from fraud. There I also assisted Edina Mayor Jim Hovland in coordination with the city and other sports organizations in financing and building Edina’s Sports Dome, a major community asset within our District.
Mentored youth groups of all ages through programs like Cub Scouts, Big Brothers and Sisters of America, & YMCA sports coaching.
Followed my passion for music, arts and education by serving as board member and President of the non-profit Minnesota Music Academy, supporting, educating and promoting MN-based artists and our creative and economic communities.
With a long-standing commitment to service and a willingness to give back— staying connected to the community I hope to represent is exactly what I am going to do. I’ll continue to be a strong advocate for all the 80,000+ constituents in Senate District 50, and Minnesota, for creative, community solutions for all.

From the Courtroom to the Capitol
I’ve worked in several industries throughout my life—including farming, construction, hospitality, advertising, and even teaching as a college professor—but I’ve spent most of my career in the legal profession. For more than 36 years, I’ve worked as an investigator and attorney, helping people and businesses navigate many complex challenges by investigating facts, advocating on their behalf, and negotiating solutions. Sometimes negotiating doesn’t work, so I have to be ready to go to battle to win–convincing judges, juries, arbitrators and even opposing counsel that my clients’ rights and interests should prevail.
While constantly reassessing strategic considerations and solution options, I always keep the big picture in mind: resolving the problem in my client’s best interests. Importantly, I do that by listening to my clients’ needs, their goals and empathetically helping them reach those goals, many times through difficult processes and through long, complex proceedings, but always as a team. I take on my clients’ cases and problems as though they were my own. I will do that as a senator, for the benefit of many Minnesotans!

Honoring Women Who Lead & Inspire
I’ve been fortunate throughout my life to be surrounded by strong, successful women—my wife, my daughter, my mother, judges and colleagues. I’m proud to support policies and a culture that ensure equal rights and opportunities for everyone, today and for generations to come. Women’s achievements have shaped our communities, our state and our country, and they deserve to be celebrated every month of the year.
When I was 9 years old, I helped with lit drops for Rosalie Wahl. I did so while being educated and impressed by a female family friend, who in those days was called a “women’s libber.” I voted for the Mondale/Geraldine Ferraro presidential ticket, not because of Mondale’s MN affiliation, but to empower the historic female VP on that team! In fact, when I first ran for elected office in 2008 for a Minnesota House seat, a newly elected State Rep from Brooklyn Park was willing to meet with me and give me guidance in my campaign. That woman was Melissa Hortman, and I am forever grateful for her mentorship and kindness.
I am committed to fighting for equality and making sure every person’s rights are protected in our district, in our state and at the Capitol.

Welcome to my Campaign Updates Blog
Welcome! I’m Mick Spence, and I’m running to be our next MN Senator from District 50, representing Bloomington and Edina. I was born and raised in Minnesota and returned to this district in 2005 with my wife to raise our three children, all of whom attended local public schools. After more than 30 years working as an attorney and advocating for people through complex challenges, in tough cases, I’m ready to dedicate my time and experience to serving our community and working toward practical solutions for the issues facing our citizens and state.
These are very serious times, more so than ever before. We need an experienced, thoughtful leader, who has successfully worked through complex, challenging and stressful situations, with a lot on the line, to get us all to a better place through strong advocacy and a proven track record of experience and vision.
